Dirk Reinartz
Serra. Sculpture
Sculpture. 1985-1998
In this monograph, the works Richard Serra completed from 1985 to 1998 are documented comprehensively for the first time. Published on the occasion of a large-scale solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles in 1998/99, the volume chronicles an unusually productive phase in the artist’s career. The uncompromising conviction with which Serra has for decades been breaking with all conventions to an extent ventured by no other artist has gained him great respect. The book shows Serra’s projects in detail, along with the accompanying sketches. The realization of his sculptures is preceded by an exacting analysis of the specific properties of the chosen materials. Using steel plates, massive stone blocks and other forms, the artist creates open or closed units and makes space palpable for the viewer. In the sculptural constructions with their carefully calibrated equilibrium, Serra evokes the themes of gravity, mass and volume. Finally, Serra is interested in influencing the conditions for perceiving a spatial situation.
In Dirk Reinartz’ photographs, which translate the spatial experience of Serra’s works into two dimensions, the viewer can get a clear feeling for the uniqueness of this plastic concept.
